Remember there is more than just orbit or keep at range. There's flying the ship by double-clicking in space which sometimes is a good idea as it makes you less predictable.

First I would ask what you are trying to do with it. If you are trying to run level 2 missions with it, forget it. It's possible depending on the mission, but in general it isn't worth the struggle. Level 1's the destroyer owns if you have skills ...

There are some corps (shameless plug: like the one linked in my sig), that are happy to mentor and train you. Just keep your eye peeled on the recruitment forum for corps that look like a good match. Like another said, don't get in a rush to corps...
